“I was waving around my flashlight like I was signaling for the bathroom, which wasn’t appearing. I wondered what shadow shape I could make that would say potty!”

All Cat Quinn was looking for a was quiet week camping. She never intended to disrupt a fey kidnapping. Least of all by peeing in a mushroom ring. Now one court wants her dead, while the other presents her with Elaby, a wise cracking cat for protection. It might not be too bad except the fey have also gone public, taken jobs and started selling reverse blessings. Unhappy with your ex? Curse them with a band of pixies. Brother mean to you? Hit him with bodach! Just need a way to get even with someone? How about an Adoring Shadow?

But a faltering economy is making Cat’s life hard. She is having trouble making ends meet when Elaby suggests she offer counter curses or clearings. He can concoct them and she can execute them. They will call their business venture Fairy Exterminators. Business is good until a clearing gives them a lead on the missing baby. Cat is the only one close enough to save it. But will she and Elaby be able to do it alone?

Fairy Exterminators Cat Quinn Book 1 eBook D E Cook

I think that the author could have done a better job of creating a reason for Cat being in the forest in the first place instead of using the cheating lover and ex-best friend. I mean once the excuse was given it's never brought up again and as of writing this review I have finished reading book three, Fairy Blind, so this excuse comes across as one of an easy out.

Catlin comes across as a little preachy to me at times on various topics such as driving the speed limit, answering your cellphone, fashion, or camping etc. I don't hate her as a character. I quite like her, but the preachy vibe gets old.

Other than those two fairly small grievances I really have enjoyed this story so far. In this story, Fairy Exterminators, we meet Cat Quinn and learn about the Fae world along with her. She successfully navigates her way through her dealings with them with the help of her Fae guardian, Elaby, a magical cat who was gifted to her by the Fae in payment for helping them...even if it was accidental. This is a nice series and I hope for two things; one that the author continues the series and two that she avoids becoming another LKH, not using the story as a way to preach or avoids making her character a Sue.

Fairy Exterminators Cat Quinn Book 1 eBook D E Cook Reviews

The book has a sort of slow start, a bit too much time explaining about a bad break-up that has no relevance to the rest of the story, but after that it is very entertaining and a quick read. The characters are likeable and well developed. They get into entertaining situations and you find yourself routing for them. The story has just the right about of action, entertaining situations and characters. I look forward to the next installment!
I loved Cat right from the start! It's too bad the grammatical and spelling errors detract from the overall enjoyment. The first in a series has Cat inadvertently helping the Fae. She gains a protector in the form of a Fae cat named Elaby. They set up business to break curses. Cat and Elaby get involved in the hunt for a kidnapped Fae baby and find themselves in the tunnels under St. Louis in a whole heap of trouble.
This book was OK. The story was interesting enough to keep me reading and that is a very BIG deal considering the many grammatical errors that make up this book. Almost every third sentence contained an error and the author appeared to have problems with tenses. A paragraph would begin in past tense, change to present tense half-way through and then jump to future tense. At one point it became so irritating I considered deleting this book from my computer. However after a long break, I began to read again and as I was prepared for the errors, I was able to skip over them. But that's me. If you're a stickler for correct grammar or are just not in the right patient and forgiving mood, you will go insane attempting to read this book.

And that's actually quite a shame. Because the story does have merit. The other thing the author did that annoyed me is something that many other fantasy/paranormal authors do; and that is, use the story as an excuse to vent their own opinions on various topics. I believe this is an attempt at humour and sometimes it works but most of the time it just grates.

The story of the main character Cat begins when she is out in the woods camping. As it's written in first person, it didn't bother me when Cat mentioned that she always picked up her trash when hiking. Unfortunately, she mentioned it three or four times and each time she did it was longer and took on a lecturing tone. In fact her tone was so sermon-like and self-righteous that I felt like jumping into my car, driving out to the closest woodland I could find and dumping a giant bag of rubbish.

When something like "dumping trash while hiking" gets mentioned more than once and the character mentioning it is not supposed to be an avid environmentalist, it really becomes obvious that this is the author's personal opinion- something I'm not interested in knowing.

One example I have copied exactly from the book shows my gripe with both the grammatical errors and the author spouting off a personal opinion

"I peeked out as he went to sit on the hood of my red Honda Accord. I do not own an SUV. Chiefly because I thought they were all marketing and no value. I mean what was an SUV anyway, but a Station wagon United with a mini Van, which equal SUV.
It was just renamed to make it palatable to middle aged people with kids. I love that people are so silly. I mean what? Did they think they were magically going to stay young forever? That kids are not going to grow up? You don't want to middle aged with kids you do have options, don't have kids or die young. It is the only way it works. I was off on tangents again as my brain fought to control what was coming in."

In my opinion this paragraph could have been deleted from the book altogether or at least stopped after the first sentence. The way the character Cat goes on and on about SUV's starts to sound unrealistic and more and more as if the author was just waiting for the right time to put in her personal opinion about SUV's. I hate that. In fact there are many such paragraphs and it really detracts from what otherwise could have been a pretty decent story.

In the end, the book is OK and for 99c if you want an interesting read then buy it. There are two more books after this one and as they are also 99c each I will give the second one a go and cross my fingers that the errors diminish.

I sincerely hope authors can read these reviews, because if they can I would heartily suggest to D.E Cook that she have her books proof-read and edited. A few errors scattered throughout a book I can forgive but not one on every page. There was even an error in the author's personal acknowledgements! and when that happens you know it's a serious problem.
